WORLD RECORD FOR THE INDIAN ARTIST SUBODH GUPTA
ON APRIL 3RD, 2008 at ARTCURIAL Briest-Poulain-F.Tajan.

Subodh Gupta's 2004 work 'Vehicle For The Seven Seas' fetched € 502,330 ($785,243), setting a world record for the artist, more than three times its estimate under the hammer at Artcurial, Paris.
A packed saleroom saw fierce bidding between the room and a number of international telephones for this emblematic sculpture by Subodh Gupta which was sold to a French collector in the room.
'Vehicle For The Seven Seas', 2004, composed of a trolley cast in bronze with gold patina and three aluminium sculpture-suitcases, was estimated € 140,000-180,000.
The previous record for the artist was established in Hong Kong on November 25th, 2007 with an untitled painting ( 167 x 229,3 cm) going for $494,308.
This world auction record is also the best second world record for Indian contemporary art (artists born after 1950). N S Harsha with 'Mass Mariage' (168x290 cm) painted in 2003 achieved $ 833,483, the first highest price, in Hong Kong in 2007.

In Vehicle for the Seven Seas, Subodh Gupta focuses on recent changes in the ordinary rural milieu from which he came. In this poor, traditional society, each individualis suddendly faced with the precarious nature of the migratory movements. The incessant comings and goings between the country and the city, between India and the rest of the world, have imposed on a traditionally sedentary population the unlimited insecurity of being between two worlds. In this infinitely distended outdoor space, baggage replaces intimacy. The objects it contains create the fixed landscape of our wanderings.

Avec Vehicle for the Seven Seas, Subodh Gupta s’intéresse tout particulièrement aux mutations récentes que subit le milieu rural et ordinaire dont il est issu. Dans ce monde pauvre et traditionaliste, chaque individu s’est vu soudainement livré à la précarité des flux migratoires. Le va-et-vient incessant entre la campagne et la ville, entre l’Inde et le Monde, livre une population traditionnellement sédentaire à l’insécurité illimitée de l’entre-deux terres. Dans ce dehors infiniment distendu, le bagage tient lieu d’intimité. Les objets qu’il contient forment le paysage fixe de nos errances.
